This is my number one anti-aging, "staving off of Father time" group of exercises. Definitely the way I believe everyone needs to train once they get past 40 -- even you young guys out there can get a real advantage.

In this series, each exercise is done for one single set -- until fatigue -- with slow, controlled reps.

No fast, jerky or explosive movement patterns.

Mobility has become the mainstay of my training, and this has been my personal workout, and hey, it seems to be working to keep me feeling young. But this program is good for you young fellas, too -- it will preserve your youth and vitality into advanced age.

As a lifelong grappler and MA practitioner, I realized that as good as the sport activity is, it is not enough, in itself, to promote health and well-being. Conditioning for martial arts -- like most sport activity -- isn't as much about training the muscles you use, but training the muscles you don't use.

I've discovered that ofttimes, the BJJ practitioner, wrestler, and MMA fighter display postural defects and muscular imbalances equal to the average, sedentary office-worker...Happily, the same exercises can be applied to both populations with great results.

- Steve Maxwell

In this series, you'll explore some absolutely excellent exercises Steve has been using personally, as well as on his clients, with quantifiable success. Whether you sit in a chair for a living, or train on the mats for hours at a time, you'll find these exercises helpful to restore balance and get you out of pain.

In this video, Steve leads two students through each movement in the program, with voice over instruction for the trainee at home.

You don't need heavy weight to become super-strong. All you have to do is to place yourself in a bio-mechanically weak position (thus forcing the muscles to work much harder due to poor leverage) and you'll become as strong as you ever need to be.

Steve thanks John Smallios (higherhealth.net.au) and Holly West for their cheerful assistance, and the PCYC City of Sydney at Woolloomooloo for making the space.

How to put it together (...or at least follow-along)

Steve's Corrective & Balancing Follow-Along Sequence

After half-a-lifetime of competitive wrestling, jiu jitsu -- and myriad injuries -- coupled currently earning a living while seated at a mobile device between seminar presentations, Steve has come up with a most excellent exercise series for keeping himself pain-free, while simultaneously maintaining a high level of strength and mobility.

And, as a bonus for the younger guys (under 35): You will BUILD strength on this program--the kind of strength that keep the injuries AT BAY and improves your sports performance.

And even IF the most strenuous thing you do each day is riding a desk chair at the office, these exercises will keep you in the pink, and get you standing tall and good. Why, people will think you should be in Hollywood!

Over the past decades, Steve has studied and performed over a thousand exercises, probably more. From this broad perspective, he's selected these specific movements as most valuable and practical.

Using the simplest equipment: a ball, a stick, a band, a belt...

The beauty of Steve's Corrective and Balancing Workout System lies in its simplicity. Aside from a horizontal bar, no dedicated workout equipment is required. In this video, follow along with Steve on the beach in sunny Greece (with Steve's voiceover guiding you) and see how he uses some flotsam and found objects to achieve his aims.

These are the [correcting and balancing] exercises that will allow you to age most gracefully. Let's face it, you're not going to be performing the Beast Press or Double body weight deadlift for life; those exercises are unsustainable and yea, will even hasten premature aging -- and I've talked to plenty of guys with hip replacements who've lived to tell. By regularly performing the exercises shown in these videos, I'm able to keep myself spry and get on the mat at a moment's notice -- even with my irregular schedule -- despite generally being 20-30 years older than the next oldest guy in the room.

There's nothing like the hands-on experience of training with Coach Maxwell, but there are plenty insights to be gained in observing Steve coaching an enthusiastic group of local students.

Reviews

I have been working in office desk jobs for 10+ years and training in Filipino Martial Arts on and off for around the same amount time. As such, I have been experiencing a lot of pain and loss of mobility in my right shoulder.

I bought your corrective and balancing video a few weeks ago and I just started the exercises for just around five days now and I can tell you, they are helping!!!!

I also am doing shoulder hangs about twice a day, another technique which I got from you via Youtube.

Thanks to your material, I'm back in training now and have slowly gotten back to trail running (which is my favourite overall conditioning exercise).

Thank you so much! (I just bought your baby crawling videos also)

Questions

Q: I was curious about your new Mobility and Conditioning video for BJJ. On the sales page, you mention that those under age 35 will gain strength. Why not those over 35? What would need to change to make the program useful for any population?

A: That's a good question. The Mobility-Conditioning for BJJ & MMA program is useful for any population.

The difference between under 35's and over 35s is that after 35, a man has fully laid the foundation for his body structure. After 35 the focus is not on building body tissue so much as maintaining the foundation already built.

If he hasn't already built a strong body by age 35, a guy is going to have to make do pretty much with what he has. There is still much refining that can be done.

Under 35s will actually build muscle on this program as they still have a greater potential for growth.
