BJJ Mobility 15 Minutes for 15 Years
STEVE MAXWELL'S BJJ MOBILITY
15 Minutes for 15 Years
“IF YOU GIVE ME JUST 15-MINUTES, I GUARANTEE I CAN ADD 15-YEARS TO YOUR JIU JITSU CAREER.”
— Steve Maxwell
This video arose in a moment while Steve was demonstrating some exercises to the guys at Gracie Phoenix... and one of them was quick enough with a video camera to bring you this amazing video pledge, wherein Steve codifies the moves that give you the added protection.
Of course, no person or thing in the world can guarantee you won't get injured... but if you practice these drills with virtual Steve (or even three times a week) you will vastly improve your odds of avoiding injury when doing jiu jitsu.
Steve's BJJ Mobility is a dedicated 15-minute workout because, as Steve says, everyone has 15 minutes.
---
Steve’s BJJ Mobility program can be used:
- as a warm-up before you get on the mat
- as a cool-down when you get off the mat
- as a substitute activity when you can't get to jiu jitsu class
- when you're on holiday
- when you're traveling
- when you're jonesing for your jits
Well, just put on Steve's BJJ Mobility and follow along with your video coach, feel the enthusiasm, and get a great jiu jitsu-specific workout.

“NOTHING WILL STOP FATHER TIME...BUT YOU CAN DEFINITELY SLOW HIM DOWN.”
— Steve Maxwell
You can definitely prevent a big loss of mobility.
“JUST BY FOLLOWING THESE SIMPLE DRILLS, YOU CAN KEEP YOURSELF PRETTY AGILE AND SPRY RIGHT UP UNTIL THE END.”
— Steve Maxwell

Cardio Where You Least Expect It
If you go through this whole routine, pretty much exercise-to-exercise, you'll feel almost as if you’ve wrestled a match. This BJJ Mobility routine can be used as a substitute when you can't actually get on the mat and do jiu jitsu.
You'll see when you try these exercises — and you just flow steadily from one to the other without rest— you’ll get quite a nice light-cardio workout.
---
In This Video
- Steve shows you how to sit up, and stand up, somewhat effortlessly, (although there's always going to be some effort when you move from the ground to your feet)
- Steve explains that simply getting up and down from the floor, when done in adequate repetitions, is incredibly cardio -- this is a jiu jitsu equivalent of burpees
- Learn how to move effortlessly from your back-on-the-ground to a standing position
- Steve shows helpful drills for learning to fall backwards on a hard surface. No matter how you do it, falling and rolling is an integral part of martial arts, and Steve offers you great overall mobility-drills for acquiring the skills and keeping the brain young and plastic
- Steve coaches you in the squat-- a really important position for the older athlete
---
For All Levels
You can play with and modify the standing-up-from-the-ground exercises and make these drills your own.
Acquire solid ground engagement skills without anxiety.
Specific to the senior jiu jitsu player.

A Few More Words from Steve
I created this series for the senior jiu jitsu players, that is, the guys who are over 40 years old and just starting out, and all the players starting to get up there in years, and finding they're beginning to lose their mobility on the mat.
It's also great if you have an injury and you can't wrestle live; you can use this routine instead, flowing from move to move, making your own combinations, and retain the movement-specific skills for jiu jitsu, even if you can't get on the mat.
I have used these moves throughout my career, and managed to keep myself moving pretty well, and I think these moves will help you, too.
Any beginners starting out in jiu jitsu -- even the young ones -- should master these basic movement patterns before they even think about starting to live roll.
How hard or easy this routine is, is specifically related to how you move; you can take the intensity up by moving fairly quickly -- not explosively -- but quickly.
